The Six Healing Sounds
An Ancient Taoist Practice for Organ Health, Emotional Release & Inner Balance.
Some of the most powerful healing happens not through touch - but through sound, breath and inner attention.
What Are the Six Healing Sounds?
The Six Healing Sounds is one of the oldest and most refined practices within the Universal Healing Tao system (a practical Taoist system to teach Taoist physical, internal, and spiritual cultivation techniques), taught for thousands of years in the Taoist monasteries of China and brought to the West by Master Mantak Chia - under whom I trained personally in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The practice is built on a profound understanding that each major organ in the body holds not only a physical function - but an emotional one. Every organ has its own energetic signature, its own sound frequency, and its own emotional landscape. When life is smooth, these organs hum quietly and efficiently. When we are under stress, when we grieve, when we suppress what we feel - the organs absorb it. They hold it. Over time, that held energy becomes tension, stagnation, and eventually - illness.
The Six Healing Sounds offer a way to reach directly into the organs and release what has accumulated there. Not through force - but through resonance.
The Six Organs & Their Sounds
The Lungs - Metal Element
Sound: SSSSSS
The lungs hold grief, sadness and the inability to let go. When we cannot release - a person, a chapter, a version of ourselves - it lives in the lungs. The lung sound creates a gentle internal vibration that loosens held sadness and supports the breath to become full and free again.
Positive quality cultivated: Courage and righteousness.
The Kidneys - Water Element
Sound: WOOOOO
The kidneys are the root of our vital energy - the deep battery of the body. They hold fear, anxiety and existential dread. Chronic fear depletes the kidneys over time, creating fatigue, lower back pain, and a pervasive sense of insecurity. The kidney sound draws warmth back into this deep reservoir.
Positive quality cultivated: Gentleness and wisdom.
The Liver - Wood Element
Sound: SHHHHHH
The liver holds anger, frustration, resentment and the inability to forgive. In Chinese medicine the liver governs the free flow of Qi through the whole body - when it is congested with unexpressed emotion, everything tightens. The liver sound releases the heat of held anger and allows energy to move freely again.
Positive quality cultivated: Kindness and generosity.
The Heart - Fire Element
Sound: HAWWWW
The heart holds joy - but also its shadow: anxiety, agitation and over-excitement. When the heart is burdened, we feel scattered, restless, unable to settle. The heart sound cools excess fire, calms the spirit, and restores the quiet radiance of genuine joy.
Positive quality cultivated: Love, joy and presence.
The Spleen - Earth Element
Sound: WHOOOO
The spleen holds worry, overthinking and the exhaustion of a mind that never stops. It governs digestion - not only of food, but of experience. When we cannot process what life brings us, the spleen becomes depleted. The spleen sound transforms rumination into clarity and rootedness.
Positive quality cultivated: Openness and trust.
The Triple Warmer - The Harmoniser
Sound: HEEEEE
The Triple Warmer is not a single organ but an energetic system that regulates the temperature and balance of the entire body - upper, middle and lower. It is the last of the six sounds, used to distribute the healing energy generated by the previous five throughout the whole system, bringing everything into equilibrium.
Positive quality cultivated: Overall harmony and balance.
What Happens in a Session
The Six Healing Sounds are not performed on you - they are practised with you.
In a dedicated session I guide you through each of the six sounds in sequence, pairing each one with its corresponding gentle movement, inner visualisation and emotional awareness. You do not need any previous experience. You do not need to be able to sing. The practice requires nothing more than your presence and your willingness to feel.
A full session moves slowly through all six organs, spending time with each one - noticing where sensation arises, what emotions surface, and what begins to release. Many people feel a deep warmth in the organs, a subtle but unmistakable sense of something shifting, and a quality of calm and clarity at the end that is unlike anything else.
What the Practice Supports
- Release of emotions stored in the organs - grief, fear, anger, anxiety, worry
- Improved organ function and circulation
- Nervous system regulation and deep relaxation
- Relief from chronic tension held in the torso and chest
- Hormonal and digestive balance
- Restoration of vital energy (Qi)
- Greater body awareness and emotional intelligence
- A sense of inner spaciousness and calm
Who This Practice Is For
The Six Healing Sounds is for anyone who feels that stress, emotion or life experience has settled somewhere in their body and will not leave through thinking alone.
It is particularly powerful for women navigating hormonal transitions, emotional exhaustion, unprocessed grief or anxiety - and for anyone who has spent years taking care of others and forgotten how to care for themselves.
A Note from My Practice
I first encountered the Six Healing Sounds during my training with Master Mantak Chia in Thailand, and I have practiced them daily ever since. What struck me immediately was the simplicity of the practice - and the depth of its effects. Time and again I have watched clients leave a session carrying something lighter in their chest, something quieter in their belly, something softer in their eyes.
This is not a dramatic practice. It does not demand anything of you. It simply creates the conditions in which the body remembers how to let go.
"The organs are not silent. They speak in the language of sensation, emotion and breath. The Six Healing Sounds teach us how to listen - and how to answer."
